Fundraising Update: New Milestones reached!

So after the two recent events, Ollie’s Half Marathon and Steve and friends Isle of Wight Bike Ride, over £661.66 has been raised, with more still coming in! We also have £944.44 saved up meaning we are only £593.90 short of the £2200 Solar Panels Project. We are also being blessed by receiving a gift from the ‘Jazzy Charity Ball’ hosted by the Southampton University Christian Union being held on Thursday 9th May.

We have also had confirmation of the purchasing of 5 bunk beds and the glass, silicon and labour to complete all the windows in both buildings!

We have now also crossed a large milestone of raising £5000 since July 2012 so we meet the criteria to become an official UK Registered Charity, and the process has begun! This will further add to the integrity of our work in the UK and Uganda and help us to raise money more easily through Gift Aid and Just Giving pages.

We also had communications with our partners through Pastor Macho in Uganda this morning. As part of the money we last sent out it funded another community day on Saturday 4th May. 16 goats were purchased to help generate income for the children and families and begin education in farming. Also soap and mosquito nets have been purchased and handed out in the community, much to the joy of many of the children. Lastly children were given toys and cloth to enjoy.

The new goats!
Cheers!

The photos give me so much joy to look at. The simplest gifts but with profound effect. This keeps me motivated to think less of myself and more of our friends in Uganda. I thank God for what I have in light of this and pray that these children will experience a more fuller life, not in material things but in joy and love.

Uganda Health News

In the news recently, it was reported that the Ugandan Government will have to increase their healthcare budget if they wish to get anywhere near the Millennium Development Goals. According to the Uganda Demographic Health Survey, the maternal mortality rate currently stands at 435 per 100,000 live births, and so they have a long way to go to reach their target of 131 per 100,000 live births by 2015. Research carried out by the White Ribbon Alliance has found that only 42% of births are assisted by a skilled health provider and 63% of women in rural areas give birth at home.

According to the Abuja declaration, Uganda committed to allocating 15% of their national budget to health, however this still stands at 9%. Increasing health care funding is critical in order to reduce the mortality rate, and help people, especially in rural areas, to get the basic health care that saves lives. As we've mentioned in previous blog posts, the health threat from malaria is large, and on the trip that founded SOUK, 4 of the 16 volunteers in the group contracted malaria.

This lack of basic healthcare is particularly evident in rural areas, and so Shine Outreach UK tries to support the people of Busia with healthcare, as well as education, food, and the restoration of family and community.

Is Uganda losing the war against HIV?

"HIV/AIDS may be medical but the social cultural issues may fuel it,"
- Prof. Charles Rwabukwali of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Makerere University

Doctors have said that Uganda is slowly losing the war against HIV/AIDS infections die to mixed messages regarding prevention. Ugandans take different emphasises when it comes to prevention. Some emphasise male circumcision, others condoms, others abstinence. But more recently that has been a call to a more collaborative approach, in particular making testing in marriages compulsory as they are one of the highest risk groups.

Dr. Cissy Kityo, the deputy director Joint Clinical Research Centre, has called for unified efforts towards increased provision of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). She states "The national HIV/AIDS prevalence is now at 7.4% and so is worrying. The infections are on the rise daily yet only 400,000 people are on ARVs, and the majority in need cannot access them. We may need to go to the streets to demand for more ARVs."

The struggle over HIV in Uganda needs younger people with more energy and new motivations to take over. It is essential that they are all preaching the same message and forming a united front in order to begin winning this war.
